Today it was announced that a special collection of historic race cars will be on display to celebrate 20 years of the Adelaide 500.
The rare collection will include one car from each year of the event, showcasing the evolution of Supercars since the first Adelaide 500 was held in 1999.
20 cars - to celebrate 20 years - will be on display in a dedicated marquee, with a selection of cars participating in laps of the street circuit on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the event.
Adelaide 500 General Manager, Nathan Cayzer said there would be more than 50 attractions for fans at the 2018 event – on and off the track – and one of the most unique would be the rare 20th anniversary car collection. “The passion of Supercars fans in Adelaide is unparalleled and we are very excited to bring them a rare collection of race cars to celebrate 20 years of a successful and iconic event.”
“The exhibition is a tribute to our history. It is the first time these cars have ever been assembled and it will no doubt become a must-see feature for all race-goers this March,” Mr Cayzer said.
Preston Hire Racing team boss Charlie Schwerkolt will be bringing his ex-Jim Beam Racing/Dick Johnson Racing Falcon BF to be a part of the action. The car was driven in the 2005 Clipsal 500 Adelaide by Hall of Famer Glenn Seton and then driven by Will Davison for DJR in the 2006, 2007 and 2008 V8 Supercars Championship.
Davison, who will race for the new 23Red Racing team in 2018, drove the car to his first Supercars victory at Eastern Creek in March 2008.
On hand for the announcement today, the 2012 Clipsal 500 champion said he is keen to get back behind the wheel of his old car as part of the festivities this year in Adelaide.
“The Adelaide 500 has been an integral part of the Supercars Championship and my career for many years. It’s an incredible circuit and has seen some dramatic races over the years,” Davison said. “Bringing this collection of cars together is an excellent way to celebrate the 20th anniversary and I have no doubt that the fans will love it. I can’t wait to get involved.”
Adelaide 500 organisers have partnered with Supercars expert Aaron Noonan and his V8 Sleuth organisation to bring together this special group of cars to celebrate the event’s rich history. The well-known motorsport reporter, who has tracked and traced the racing histories of every Supercar raced in the iconic event, will deliver an array of cars raced by some of the biggest names in the sport including Craig Lowndes, Mark Skaife and Jamie Whincup.
Further announcements regarding the cars that will be joining the one-off special tribute collection will be announced in upcoming weeks, prior to the event on March 1-4.
