JAMIE WHINCUP has picked up where he left off and topped the timesheets in opening practice for the Supercars season-opening Adelaide 500.
By Matthew Agius
Whincup steered his new Red Bull Holden Racing Team ZB Commodore to a 1:20.1622 on Friday’s first hitout for the series in 2018.
The Triple Eight stable of Whincup, Shane Van Gisbergen and Craig Lowndes had the top three positions in hand for most of the morning, before a late group of competitors went on track to clock a series of hot laps.
While the Ford faithful would be disappointed to see Whincup back at the top, their own champions clocked quick times too.
Mark Winterbottom (Tickford Racing/Bottle-O) was second quickest, just two tenths off the pace, while last year’s series runner-up Scott McLachlan (Shell V-Power Racing) was four tenths behind Whincup.
The Red Bull HRT Commodores and Tickford Falcons were the standouts in practice, with five of the top six spots occupied by cars from those stables.
Hundredths of a second separated Shane Van Gisbergen (Red Bull HRT), Will Davison in his first round for new single-car operation Milwaukee Racing in an ex-Tickford FGX Falcon, and Cam Waters – the trio five tenths off the leader’s pace.
James Courtney (Mobile 1 Boost Mobile Racing) Tim Slade (Brad Jones Racing), Craig Lowndes (Autobarn/Triple Eight) and Scott Pye (Mobile 1 Boost Mobile) rounded out the Top 10.
Second Practice for the Supercars gets underway at 11:50am.
