THE 20th edition of the Adelaide 500 has welcomed more than 273,500 racegoers through the gates over the four-day celebration of motorsport and Australia’s premier racing series – the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship.
It marks an over 11 percent increase in attendances on 2017, and the event’s largest Sunday crowd in five years, continuing its status as Australia’s biggest domestic motorsport event with over 4.8 million attendees in the 20 editions of the race so far.
2018 saw the Supercars headline a feature race category program consisting of all its main support categories, including the Dunlop Super2 Series, Porsche Wilson Security Carrera Cup and ECB SuperUtes, as well as popular categories including Stadium Super Trucks, Touring Car Masters, Audi R8 LMS Cup and Nulon Improved Production Cars.
Headline concert acts included international superstar Robbie Williams wowing the crowd on Sunday night, +LIVE+ rocking Saturday and Cold Chisel leading an awesome ‘Made in SA’ concert on Friday.
Popular paddock displays, including the 20 Years 20 Supercars exhibition and Holden 70th anniversary display took fans back down memory lane, while off-track entertainment including the New Holland Split Rhythm presented by Monster Energy exhilarated fans.
Events South Australia Executive Director, Hitaf Rasheed praised the Adelaide 500’s loyal fans and people of South Australia for their incredible support of the event over two decades.
“We are thrilled to have celebrated our 20th Adelaide 500 in such great style,” Ms Rasheed said.
“It was important that we paid tribute to 20 years of Supercars, our loyal motorsport fans who have travelled or attended each year, and also to the people of South Australia for their support of this event which has seen more than $545 million injected into the South Australian economy (approximately 400 jobs per year created) in its first 19 years.
“Congratulations to Shane Van Gisbergen, Roland Dane and the Red Bull Holden Racing Team on a great win, and to all the other winners from our feature race categories.
“The thrilling Virgin Australia Supercars Championship race along with Robbie Williams were a fantastic finale to a wonderful event, which pleasingly attracted thousands of families and youngsters - our next generation of Adelaide 500 fans.”
