Scott McLaughlin has taken out provisional pole in a strong show of force for his Shell V-Power Racing Team, with teammate Fabian Coulthard third fastest.
McLaughlin blitzed sector one to nail provisional pole, while Whincup's strong back sector ensured he would take P2 - exactly five hundredths off the lead.
Coulthard was within a whisker of Whincup - a further hundredth behind, and just one-thousandth ahead of fourth-placed former winner Nick Percat.
Four-tenths separated the top 10 overall.
Two Tickford entries made the jump into the shootout - with Cam Waters overcoming yet another hairy moment at Turn 8 to claim fifth, while Will Davison continued his strong form at Adelaide in recent qualifying years in sixth.
Shane Van Gisbergen was two-tenths off the pace in seventh ahead of the Castrol Altima of Rick Kelly and the Holdens of Dave Reynolds and James Courtney.
