FABIAN COULTHARD has blitzed the field with the fastest time in the Top 10 Shootout to claim pole position for Saturday’s opening 250km race of the Superloop Adelaide 500.
The Kiwi was third-last to commence his single-lap dash but seized provisional pole after comfortably eclipsing Cam Waters (Monster Energy’s) previous fastest lap with a third sector blitz.
Coming out ahead of championship winners Jamie Whincup and teammate Scott McLaughlin, Coulthard’s lap stood the test of his closest rivals and he'll have the inside line heading into Saturday's first race.
Whincup pipped McLaughlin for P2, meaning the reigning champion will start third for the race alongside Waters' Monster Energy Mustang.
Shane Van Gisbergen led the shootout before Waters, but could only manage the fifth fastest time overall, having aced the third sector to leap ahead of David Reynolds, who will start alongside him in sixth.
Will Davison, Nick Percat, James Courtney and Rick Kelly rounded out the top 10.
The first 250km race commences at 4:50 pm on Saturday afternoon.
