The Superloop Adelaide 500 was special in more ways than one for Scott McLaughlin, who has fond memories of watching the exciting first round in Adelaide on TV as a child.
Now, for his 200th race in Supercars, he’s won one.
The 2019 Superloop Adelaide 500 saw the debut of the six Mustangs, with McLaughlin’s making a strong first impression by breaking Ford’s six-year victory drought in Adelaide.
The opening round saw plenty of thrills, and some close calls around the track, including Macauley Jones’s high-speed crash on Turn 9, Cam Waters’ cool suit failure in Race 1, and a spectacular collision in Pitlane between Rick Kelly and Chaz Mostert, which McLaughlin narrowly avoided.
“I’ve never seen anything like that. I don’t think I’ve seen that since a NASCAR race”, he told SuperloopADL500.com.au.
Above it all was McLaughlin’s near-perfect weekend, who topped nearly every session, including Adelaide’s first Thursday Supercars session.
“I feel relieved. I’ve got through a big weekend, it’s just been a big week as I’ve been here since Monday. It’s nice to get through it and come out with 300 points, it’s a great start to the year,” he said.
Aside from winning the Superloop Adelaide 500, Scott managed to pack a lot of South Australia into his week, visiting the Fringe, and taking a drive through the McLaren Vale wine region with team mate Fabian Coulthard in a 1964 Mustang.
The drive hit close to home for Scott in particular, whose family has always treasured classic cars.
“My Dad had a 1967 Ford Mustang when I was young, but we sold that to pay for my racing when I was coming through the ranks,” he said.
“We’ve always been a classic car family, and obviously the Mustang is a classic car both in the US and here in Australia, so it’s special to be driving it.”
Scott was able to finish his 200th race with a win completed by the support of his family.
“It’s a huge tick of the box for my family,” he said.
“You either want to win the Superloop Adelaide 500, Bathurst, or the Championship. I’ve won the Superloop Adelaide 500, I’ve won the Championship, so now it’s about going to try and win Bathurst.”
After winning the Championship in 2018, Scott starts the new season strong with 300 points heading into the second round.
“This race kick starts or kills your Championship, and certainly we’ve kick started ours this weekend…” he said.
“I’m excited for the Mustang this season, it was a great start this weekend. We’ve got something to build on, the car’s really nice… It feels good and gives you a lot of confidence heading into the next few rounds.
“We know that the other competitors will be coming at us pretty hard, so we don’t want to get complacent. We’re just going to keep pushing on and see how we go.”
While his was busy winning races this weekend, Scott still managed to fit in plenty of co-curricular activities.
“I went to the Fringe twice, the Red Hot Chili Peppers was sick… The Adelaide crowd is just massive here so you really enjoy it. This time of year is Adelaide time, the Superloop Adelaide 500, so I wouldn’t want to see it changed”.
Scott McLaughlin has won the 2019 Superloop Adelaide 500, with Monster Energy Racing’s Cam Waters in second, and 2018 winner Shane Van Gisbergen from Red Bull Holden Racing Team taking third place.
